To the south of Pattaya is Big Buddha Hill. On top of the hill sits the Big Buddha over-looking Pattaya and Jomtien. The Buddha is approximately 30m (100ft) high. The structure was constructed when Pattaya was still a small fishing village before being discovered by military personnel during the Vietnam conflict.

If coming to Pattaya a trip to this area is well worth the effort. Other interesting sites in the area are the temple near the Big Buddha and to the west Pratamnak Hill and Admiral Hill Viewpoint. There is also a fitness park on the north slope of the hill.

This photo shows the Big Buddha at a quieter time.

Songkran is well and truly underway in Pattaya. Every time you step outside your door you risk being drowned. Some people love it others hate it.

There is no doubt that some people take it too far. Almost every time that it is taken too far it is a farang. They seem to great take great delight in drenching anyone who comes near them. Even those with small children, luggage and even those with obvious signs of injury are shown no mercy.

It is However a great experience and a must do event for anyone who enjoys Pattaya. These couple of photos were taken on Soi 8. They give some insight into the mayhem that occurs during the day during this festival.

If you do come for Songkran then please try to not follow the lead of the many farangs. It is probalby not a good idea to wet those going about their daily affairs. Small children should also be out of bounds. A lot of the bigger kids have a great time and the day should be from them. Even though I have seen it many times it is not a good idea to throw water in the face of someone riding a motorcycle.

It was Halloween in Pattaya last night and there was plenty going on. There was a free concert at the junction of Beach Road and Pattaya Central Road (Pattaya Klang.) Beach road was more of less closed to traffic and taken over by pedestrians. Many stalls had been set up along the length of Beach Road giving a festive atmosphere. Likewise, Walking Street had much to see and there were many people around. The big Wat on Pattaya South Road (Pattaya Tai) also had a market. The festivities are likely to carry on over the next few days with Loy Krathong being on Tuesday.

These two lovelies were outside Club 23 on Soi 8 trying to get customers into the bar.

The beach side of Beach Road has been referred to as the Coconut Bar. Many people walk along the path next to the beach. Some do it for exercise, others for to look at other people and others for a bit of fun. As you walk along the strip you will be offered everything for jet skis to boat rides to nearby islands. You can buy beer at a local 7eleven and soak up the true atmosphere of the Coconut Bar. Like many areas there are ladies waiting to entertain you if that is what you wish. It is a great place to spend some daylight time while you are in Pattaya.

Yesterday was Christmas and many people were out celebrating it in the way they do and that’s with lots of drink. Even though Christmas is not a part of the Buddhist faith it has been accepted by the Thais in Pattaya. No prizes for guessing why.

A good place to bring in Christmas was a the Cherry Bar on Soi 8. I’m sure that many frequent visitors to Pattaya will have problems identifying this man in red who was happily handing out Christmas present to all. I’m sure that the condoms he was given out were put to good use.

It was Loy Krathong last night and the ladies where dressed up for this special event.

Loy Krathong is thought to have originated in India as a Hindu festival. A krathong is a same raft tradiationally constructed of banana tree trunk and decorated with banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks. Before the Krathong is floated (loy = float) hair and a small amount of money are placed on it. Thais believe that floating the krathong will bring good luck.

The most outrageously dressed ‘ladies’ seem to be the ladyboys. They just go that extra distance to draw attention to themselves.

The heart of the nightlife scene in Pattaya is Walking Street. During the day-time it does not appear to be too different from the many other streets in Pattaya. However, at night the neon goes on and the crowds coming flooding in. The crowd is very mixed from family groups to single men out looking for a good time.

Walking Street is the hub of the bar activity in Pattaya. Along this strip there are many bars, gogos, coyote bars, hostess bars and discos. There is more than enough to keep most people happy for some time. While it is the heart of the nightlife in Pattaya it is a good idea to explore some of the other bar areas in Pattaya.
